3. Credit Points (CP) and Recognition

What happens if I earn more credit points than required (90/120 credit points for Master's) – can I take more modules to improve my average, or choose which modules appear on my transcript?

To ensure comparable study conditions for all students, the number of ECTS credits earned must remain close to the prescribed maximum. Minor deviations/exceedances are accepted, for example, due to imported courses that do not exactly fit into the ECTS credit scheme of the FIN degree programs and serve to complete required study areas. All additional ECTS credits earned during the standard period of study are automatically transferred to the supplementary/additional area and are no longer included in the overall assessment. Students do not have the option of freely choosing their credits.

Can I exchange exams from the supplementary area for exams from regular study areas?

No. Once a decision has been made regarding the type of exam (creditable or not creditable), it remains valid.

Can I have a module moved to a different (creditable) area?

Yes, provided the module is applicable in this area. Please send an email to the examination office with the course title and number, your student ID number, and the target area.

Can I change the assignment of completed subjects in my academic record myself?

No, this must be done by the examination office. However, if the change request concerns a course for which several classifications apply, a change within these classifications is easily possible.

In which area can I have a course credited?

See "Applicability" for each module in the module handbook: https://bookstack.cs.ovgu.de/

If I change my course of study, will I automatically receive credit for equivalent achievements?

No, coursework from another degree program is not automatically considered equivalent. Credit transfer only occurs after an application is submitted to the new degree program. The deadlines for recognition specified in the new AROSTA regulations apply; these supersede the one-semester deadline (according to the current study and examination regulations).
